“The French painter Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) is one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists artists. While aligned with the Impressionists early in his career, he broke with them to pursue his own style and objectives. Influenced by the simplicity of primitive art, as well as the art of Japan and other cultures, Gauguin developed a highly personal and individual style that charged his paintings and prints with imaginative and psychological meaning. In 1887 Gauguin traveled to the South Seas and over the next several years spent much of his time in Martinique, Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands, where he painted many of his greatest works. He is today considered one of the founders of modern art.”Dover Publications
